Dollarweed: Not Worth Having in the Lawn

Dollarweed

John D. Byrd, Mississippi State University, Bugwood.org

What is Dollarweed?

Dollarweed is also known as pennywort. It has green, glossy leaves that are shaped like a silver dollar, which is where it gets its name. The leaves also look very similar to lily pads. In fact, this weed is often found in moist or even very wet areas in the lawn and produces clusters of white flowers in the summer.

How to Get Rid of Dollarweed

Reduce irrigation if the lawn is too moist. Doing this will stop pennywort from spreading. Applying postemergent granules or liquid herbicides to actively growing weeds will help to curb growth and stop an infestation. Because it's a hard-to-control weed, it may take several applications to see any significant results.
